Drive Through South Carolina and Georgia: Dog-Friendly Stops on Our Road Trip
On our recent road trip from Virginia to Florida and back, we had the pleasure of driving through the scenic states of South Carolina and Georgia. With my adventurous dog Zen by my side, I was looking for the best pet-friendly spots to explore along the way, especially in Charleston, SC, and Savannah, GA, where we stayed overnight. From charming parks to unique attractions, we discovered some fantastic places that made our journey even more memorable. In this post, I’ll share our favorite dog-friendly spots in these beautiful Southern states.

1. Waterfront Park
One of the most iconic spots in Charleston, Waterfront Park is a must-visit for scenic views and a relaxing atmosphere. Stretching along the Cooper River, this park offers beautiful walkways with palmetto trees and plenty of green space for your dog to explore. The famous Pineapple Fountain, a symbol of hospitality, is a perfect photo-op spot, and the cool river breeze makes it a refreshing stop on a warm day.
2. White Point Garden
At the southern tip of the Charleston Peninsula, White Point Garden is steeped in history and offers stunning harbor views. This park is known for its grand live oaks and historical monuments, providing a shady retreat. As you stroll through the park, you’ll see cannons and statues commemorating various historical events.
3. East Bay Street and Church Street
A pet-friendly walk along East Bay Street and Church Street is a must for an authentic taste of Charleston’s charm. These streets are lined with colorful historic homes, each with its unique character and story. The Rainbow Row on East Bay Street is famous for its pastel-colored Georgian houses. Both streets are dog-friendly, allowing you and your pup to soak in Charleston’s architectural beauty and Southern charm.
4. Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site
Charles Towne Landing is the historic site where English settlers established the first permanent European settlement in South Carolina in 1670. The site is dog-friendly, making it an ideal spot for a history lesson and a relaxing walk with your furry friend.
Charleston’s blend of history, charm, and pet-friendly spaces made it one of our favorite stops on this road trip.
